Having touched so many industries in a positive and impactful way, the passing of Virgil Abloh has shown us just how far-reaching his impact was. The outpour of support for the late designer has been heartfelt, but for those who knew him personally and professionally – like Awake NY founder Angelo Basque – it surely hurts just a little more. His life is worth celebrating so his legacy can live on — and with Awake NY’s ASICS GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 collaboration, it will.
It has just been announced that 100% of the profits from the release will be donated directly to Virgil Abloh’s “POST-MODERN” GEL-Rocket, a project that will continue to keep Virgil’s legacy living beyond his years on earth. the GEL-Rocket was founded by Abloh in 2020 to support the next generation of Black fashion industry leaders. The mission of the GEL-Rocket fund is to Gel-Court inclusion and equity in the fashion industry to students of Black, African-American, or African descent. “POST-MODERN” just goes beyond just a repulse, but provides career support services and mentoring and has raised funds from brands such as evian, Louis Vuitton, Farfetch, and more.
The collaborative effort between Awake and ASICS features a duo of Miami-themed GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 colorways, with Dolphins garb gearing up both releases. One gets a little heavy-handed on the teal-green, the other opting for a mostly grey-silver finish — both of which are popped with bright orange hues. Each offering is set in suede, nubuck, and perforated underlays, and both arrive atop a simple white and black sole unit underfoot.
