These Stats Show that the Warriors Have Actually Been Worse Defensively with Draymond On Court

    DPOY? Don’t think so.

Earlier this year, Draymond Green made it his mission to reclaim the coveted Defensive Player of the Year Award after being snubbed in last year’s All-NBA Defensive Team.

And why not? He made a name for himself as an aggressor (and trash-talker) who is one of the league’s most elite defenders. And while Green won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2016-17, he hasn’t been able to find same impact on defense this season as he has in those prior.

Anthony Slater embellishes on this, claiming that the Warriors defense has been significantly worse when Dray is on the floor:

    Warriors defensive rating this season
-In Draymond Green’s 396 minutes on the court: 101.7
-In Draymond Green’s 665 minutes off of it: 111.3

Yeah, the sample size is smaller with Green on the floor, but the results reflect a concerning trend. That’s almost a full 10-point swing in defensive efficiency with Green riding the pine

Slater also revealed the team’s offensive rating is taking a hit with Green on the floor, too:

    112.1 when he’s on, 113.4 when he’s off

    Earlier this year.

Although the difference is far less extreme, Green is also making them worse on the offense end when he’s on the floor. They log a 112.1 rating when he’s on the court versus a 113.4 when he’s off.

Let’s clarify; Not all stats indicate that Green’s defense has been poor this season. He is still recording 1.8 steals per game, although he’s averaging less than 1 blocks for the first time since 2013-14. He is also ranked 20th in the NBA in defensive win shares, with a rating of 0.144.

Green has had a controversial season in 2018-19, and if his defense isn’t up to the Warriors high-standards, then his emotional negatives will surely outweigh his positives. Then the Warriors have a decision to make about Dray’s future with the franchise.
