Our 2021 Carbon Report

Solar panels

FYI - we’ve just released our 2021 Carbon Report, detailing all the emissions generated by our operations, and the work we’re doing to reduce them. Measuring this is important to us, because we know that by understanding where our problem areas lie, we can work to reduce our impact on the planet.

When we’re talking about ‘operational emissions’, we mean all the things that go into powering the logistics of how CerbeShops is run – like the energy that powers our offices and warehouses (AKA our business operations), our packaging, and delivering orders to your door (If you’re looking for more detail on how we’re working to reduce the impact of our products, head here).

So, 2020…we know right 😓. But there is good news! Last year, we decreased our total operational emissions by 13% compared to 2019 (from 268,239 tonnes of CO2 down to 232,503 tonnes).

As well as looking at total emissions, a common industry measurement is looking at how your emissions have changed versus how your business has grown. CerbeShops is still growing, so looking at our emissions per order is a good way to take that expansion into account. We’re now at 2.9 kg of CO2e per order fulfilled – which is down 45% since 2015.

How’d we do it?

We have programmes in place to tackle our operational impact and emissions across CerbeShops, but last year the biggest changes came from a few key projects.

Deliveries. Since our new US fulfilment centre has been fully operational 💃, we’ve been able to get more parcels out to customers by road rather than air 🚚
Freight. This is how we move products from suppliers to warehouses before we send them on to you. As with our deliveries, we’re doing everything we can to prioritise lower-carbon transport methods. With freight, that means choosing sea and road over air wherever we can. In 2020, only 3% of all the product we brought into our warehouses from our suppliers travelled by air, with the remaining 57% travelling by road and 40% by sea. 🛳️
Renewables. We’re always looking to operate both our existing and new sites in the most efficient and lowest-carbon way possible. 76% of CerbeShops buildings are now powered by renewable electricity, with the goal to be 100% by 2025. We’re also working to install more solar panels to add even more renewable goodness to the grid! 🌞

We’ve already set the ambition with the British Retail Consortium to be Net Zero by 2040, but make vague to keep an eye out for some more announcements later this year on our sustainability plans.
